T. S. Eliot, 1888 - 1965 Born September 26, 1888, in St. Louis, Missouri, T. S. (Thomas Stearns) Eliot was a notable American-English poet, literary critic, and dramatist and is recognized as the leader of the Modernist Movement in poetry.

In 1914, Eliot met Ezra Pound with whom he had a close professional relationship throughout his career. It was also in 1914 that Eliot moved to London, where he settled permanently. Eliot’s first important publication in 1915 of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is considered by many to be the first masterpiece of English Modernism. In 1922, his best known poem, “The Waste Land,” was published, winning Eliot an international reputation. During the 1930s, Eliot developed interests in theology and sociology and he published three short books (or long essays) on the subjects as a result. 1948 saw Eliot awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry.”

Eliot had a relatively quiet private life and was married twice. His first wife died in 1947 and in 1957 he married Valerie Fletcher with whom he lived until his death on January 4, 1965, from emphysema and related complications.
